I think, like any model, classifications are always wrong.
This thought came up in a chat about game genres. I get that as humans we need to classify things so we can reduce the amount of information in life to an amount of data we can actually work with.
However, the nature of classification means we must mis-classify stuff. No matter how much we try to get it perfect. The only “perfect” classification would be everything in its own unique class. At which point the classification is no longer helpful. For this reason, I don’t think it is very useful at all to debate classifications like this with people. ESPECIALLY, about subjective stuff like genre and art.
I would be curious about how this thought-line stacks up against genetic classification. How true is this there? How much does it matter? Why do we classify anyway? Is it useful?
Like models, I’m sure classification is useful. It must be. I just doubt that it is worth fighting over because it is always subjective.
